Chiropractic care is an essential element in the integrative approach to medicine taken by the Alliance Institute for Integrative Medicine.  Chiropractic is the science and art of restoring and maintaining health through the gentle, careful manipulation of the body joints and spine, to restore normal nerve function. Chiropractors (D.C.s) are licensed professionals.

Chiropractors take a natural approach to healing, concentrating on the mind-body relationship while also placing emphasis on nutrition and wellness. Chiropractors do not prescribe drugs or perform surgery, but will refer patients for medical care when necessary. All our chiropractors at the Alliance Institute work closely with our MD’s.

How does chiropractic work?

 

The primary focus of chiropractic is the detection, reduction and correction of spinal misalignments and nervous system dysfunction. Chiropractors believe there is a relationship between the spine and the health of the nervous system. Chiropractic seeks to find the blockage and eliminate it, allowing the body to naturally heal.

What conditions can be treated by chiropractic?

 

Chiropractic treats chronic ailments such as arthritis, bursitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, heel spurs, sports-related problems, scoliosis, neck pain, back pain, shoulder and arm pain, herniated discs, whiplash and headaches.

Are there any side effects to chiropractic?

 

The most frequent side effect is soreness, which lasts only a few hours. This soreness is similar to a feeling of overexertion.

There is a very remote possibility of underlying blood vessel injury, nerve or spinal cord damage. The frequency of this is less than one in ten million chiropractic adjustments. Our chiropractors will work with you to ensure that your treatment is as safe and gentle as possible. If you are concerned in any way, please ask about gentle techniques, such as Counter-Strain, which are available. Be sure your chiropractor is aware of any pertinent medical history to ensure your treatment is safe and appropriate for your physical condition.

What happens during treatment?

 

The chiropractor will ask a series of questions regarding the complaint, the dietary habits, family history, lifestyle and other care you have received. A complete physical examination is performed, which may include x-rays and other diagnostic procedures. Then the chiropractor will conduct a careful examination checking for areas of spinal dysfunction or "subluxation."

 

Once the chiropractor has evaluated your problem, he or she will perform an adjustment or manipulation. The adjustment can be administered by hand or with special instruments and involves applying pressure to areas that are out of alignment. This treatment can restore normal range of motion for the patient as well.

 

There are several other chiropractic techniques which can be used for treatment. The chiropractor will discuss specific procedures after a thorough evaluation of your condition.

How many treatments will I need?

 

This varies with your age, general physical condition and your health goals. If further or other treatment is necessary, a chiropractor will refer you to a surgeon or other health care provider.

Treatment is typically one of three types:

• Symptom control or elimination
• Reconstruction, returning the neuro-musculoskeletal system to normal
• Health maintenance

 

Does chiropractic hurt?

 

Chiropractic adjustments do not hurt. You may experience slight discomfort during the adjustment, but this lasts only seconds.

 

Are there any instructions to follow after receiving treatment?

 

Follow your chiropractor's advice. Some treatments are facilitating and exhilarating. In this case, stay active. Other visits may have a sedative effect, in which case you should rest.
