The Alliance Institute for Integrative Medicine has been a pioneer in the effort to bring the healing benefits of therapeutic massage into the arena of conventional medicine. While many of us think of massage as a spa-based luxury, more and more research supports the vision the Alliance has held for many years: massage helps us heal. Massage also offers a wonderful way to help you feel more relaxed, less anxious, and can help reduce many kinds of pain. Our talented staff of massage therapists offers a variety of massage therapies. They all work closely with our physicians, chiropractors, and other therapists to make sure you get the massage therapy that is best for you.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)
Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) massage is a type of light massage designed to help stimulate the flow of lymphatic fluid throughout the body. MLD is based on the theory that gentle stretching and rhythmic pumping on the skin will help to detoxify the lymphatic system and help enhance the immune system. Through gentle, carefully guided movements and touch, MLD is also used to help relieve pain and induce a state of relaxation. At the Alliance Institute, your MLD therapy session may also include a partial or full body massage.
MLD is often recommended for these conditions:
Swelling Swelling, also known as edema, can result from injuries, surgeries, or sluggish lymph flow. MLD may help relieve pain from swelling and promote healing by accelerating the movement of lymphatic fluid to healthier parts of the body for re-absorption. MLD may also help chronic edema by improving the local circulation and reducing the chance of infection. MLD can be used before surgery to prepare the tissues and decrease post-surgical swelling. Lymphedema MLD is particularly useful for patients who develop lymphedema of the arm following mastectomy and lymph node dissection. Sinus conditions MLD may help drain the tissues of the face and neck. This can facilitate sinus drainage, increase circulation to the face, and reduce infections and sinus headache. Burns and scars Stimulation of the skin and circulation of the lymphatic fluid may help to encourage healing and diminish the appearance of burns and scars. Overall health and well-being By reducing pain and stress, MLD helps you to relax fully, and often feel energized by the end of the session. Our therapeutic massage patients come to us from Hyde Park, Loveland, Westchester/LibertyTownship, Mason and Indian Hill well as Springdale, Terrace Park, Blue Ash, Finneytown, Reading and from all over the United States.
